I once had a client who wasted almost his entire marketing budget. Why? Because he made a huge SEO mistake that, unfortunately, happens far too often. He thought he could get his site to position 1 on Google within a few weeks. The problem? After three months he gave up and switched to expensive ads because he did not see immediate success. Sound familiar? It happens more often than you think.

By the end of this article, you will know how long SEO really takes and how to avoid this trap. And a small spoiler: it definitely takes longer than most people think.

The biggest SEO mistake: a lack of patience

SEO is not the quick fix that many people hope for. Maybe you have also heard that you can conquer the top positions within a few weeks. Believe me, that is a myth. Many people come to me with this idea: “I want to be in position 1 for my keyword in two months.” But it does not work like that. SEO is a marathon, not a sprint.

An example: the client I mentioned earlier wanted to throw in the towel after three months because he did not see any top rankings. That was the mistake. He switched to paid ads and threw away all the work that had already gone into his SEO efforts. Yet he was on the right track, he just lacked patience.

The truth about SEO: a marathon, not a sprint

SEO takes time to pay off.

Studies, and my own experience too, show that it usually takes 3 to 6 months before you even land on the first page. If your site is already well optimised, it could happen faster. But in highly competitive markets or with new websites, we are talking about 6 to 12 months or longer. Only 5.7% of all pages make it into the top 10 within a year at all, that says it all, doesn’t it?

What influences your ranking? The most important factors

Of course, you want to know what exactly influences your ranking. There are over 200 factors, but let’s look at the most important ones:

  1. Domain authority: How trustworthy is your site for Google? This often depends on the age of your domain and the number of high-quality backlinks. More on this in the section on backlinks.
  2. Backlinks: Who links to you? Quality beats quantity here. A few links from large, reputable sites are worth more than 100 low-quality backlinks.
  3. Keyword competition: Who are you up against? How hard is it to rank for your keyword? Keywords with high competition take longer before you reach the top.
  4. Technical SEO: This includes things like page speed, mobile optimisation and how well your site is structured. If Google has trouble crawling your site, that is a big problem. Pay attention to a clean URL structure.

How long does SEO really take? Realistic expectations

Okay, here is the truth: the first visible changes can come within 3 to 6 months, provided you do everything right. But that does not mean you jump straight to position 1. These first successes are often small steps. You usually only see really good results after 6 to 12 months. That sounds like a long time, but it is worth it if you keep at it consistently.

An example from our own work:

For a client in the health insurance industry, we increased traffic from 200 to 1,500 visitors in just two months by delivering technical optimisations and relevant content. Now, eight months later, traffic is at 5,800 visitors per month. This shows that SEO is a long-term investment, but the results speak for themselves.

Important factors for your SEO success

  1. Content quality: How helpful is your content for users? The better your content, the more readily Google ranks you.
  2. Backlinks: Watch out for toxic backlinks. Bought or spam links can do your site more harm than good. Quality over quantity, always.
  3. Technical SEO: Make sure your site is cleanly built. Heading structures (H1, H2, H3) and page loading time are crucial here. Slow pages lose.

Short-term SEO wins: hybrid solutions with ads

Are you looking for a way to achieve faster results while your SEO is working? Then consider a hybrid solution. You can combine SEO with Google Ads or Facebook Ads to secure some quick wins while your organic rankings build up. This way you get traffic immediately while your long-term SEO strategy keeps running.

Avoid the biggest SEO traps

Many people make the mistake of focusing on short-term results and giving up too early. SEO is not a shortcut. It is work that pays off over time. If someone promises you that you will reach position 1 within three months, alarm bells should ring. It sounds too good to be true, and in most cases it is.

Stay patient and consistent. Regular, helpful content and a good backlink strategy are the key to success.

Conclusion: The best time for SEO is now

To be completely honest: the best time to start with SEO was ten years ago. The second-best time is now. The sooner you start, the sooner you will see results. Give your site the time it needs and you will be rewarded in the long term, without having to spend huge sums on ads later.

If you need help with your SEO strategy or are unsure where to start, we are happy to carry out an SEO audit for you. Leave your link and we will take a close look at your site. And remember: patience pays off.

That’s it from me. Keep at it and good luck on your SEO journey.
