App development is changing rapidly: thanks to new technologies and tools such as Bolt.new, it is easier than ever to turn innovative ideas into reality. I recently rebuilt an app based on the well-known “5-Minute Journal”. In less than an hour, the result was a minimalist gratitude app that is not only functional but also impresses with modern design and smart features.

The process step by step

1. Inspiration and preparation

First, I looked for design ideas on Paywallscreen.com and found an app that appealed to me visually and functionally. Based on this inspiration, I wrote a short prompt and put it straight into Bolt.new.

2. Development

  • Gratitude entries: Users can enter and save moments of gratitude such as “Good coffee in the morning” or “Lovely sunshine”.
  • Firebase database: All entries are stored securely and reliably in the cloud.
  • Design and UI/UX: A clean, minimalist look with soft gradients and animations ensures a pleasant user experience.

3. Integrating AI

To make the app even smarter, I worked with the free Google AI API and integrated the following features:

  • Mood analysis: The app recognises the mood of the entries and offers personalised insights.
  • Smart tag suggestions: While you write, the app suggests relevant tags.
  • AI gratitude coach: The coach provides inspiring questions and prompts to strengthen the feeling of gratitude.

4. Challenges and solutions

Of course, there were a few hurdles, for example:

  • Problems saving profile pictures and cropping the images.
  • Debugging buttons and navigation elements.
  • Optimising token consumption to use resources efficiently.

With a little patience and the help of Bolt.new, I was able to solve these problems, or at least put them on the “to-do list” for the next iteration.

5. Deployment and costs

The app was hosted on Netlify and is live. The low development effort is remarkable: the entire process cost me just €1.20 in token usage, a great way to build an MVP quickly and cheaply.

Why does this matter?

Being able to develop apps in such a short time and at such low cost opens new doors, especially for solo developers, start-ups and small teams. With tools like Bolt.new, ideas can be tested and optimised quickly without needing a large budget.

Next steps

I am currently working on improving the app further. Planned are:

  • New design updates for even more intuitive use.
  • Additional AI features such as micro-exercises to encourage gratitude in everyday life.
  • Better navigation and customisation of the user interface.

Try the app yourself

I invite you to try out the app and give me feedback. Here is the link: https://dankbarkeitsapp.netlify.app/

What do you think? Could tools like Bolt.new change the way we develop apps? I look forward to your opinions and discussions in the comments.
